About

This is a blog about rebuilding, upgrading, and sailing Vellamo, the last Sabre 42 to come out of the factory. I wasn’t searching for a boat of this size, and never thought I’d be able to afford a Sabre, however everything seemed to align for this amazing opportunity. I wanted a fun, capable boat that was enough of a project to allow me to set it up how I felt was right, and yet not something I had to keep on the hard for years while I worked on her without being able to enjoy sailing her.

I am approaching this as the last boat I will ever buy… so I’m trying to do things the “right” way. She left the factory in 1990, and at the time of purchase, she had sat neglected on the hard for 3 years, so there is a lot of work to be done.

The name Vellamo comes from Finnish mythology. She’s the goddess of water, seas, and wind.
